They are bigger, better, and bolder. The new generation of consoles is ready to be unleashed upon the eager public. Manufacturers have them packed and loaded with connectivity to multiple devices, wireless capabilities and even better graphical abilities.
But what do they really offer? One could wonder if these bells and whistles are not too much for a machine, which upon reflection, should be used to enjoy games with. After all, the Xbox360, PS3 and the new Nintendo machine are games consoles.
The ceiling has been reached, although manufacturers do not seem aware of that yet. Videogaming has certainly reached the mainstream masses, but I wonder how much effort needs to be put into convincing the average public that they need to shell out $400 for a new Xbox system, while a current console gives the same experiences.
I recently witnessed a demonstration of the new Xbox 360, and aside from the graphical presentation (requiring an expensive progressive scan HD television), I did not notice anything new: usual gameplay, usual setting, usual experience.

It is with these thoughts in mind that I am holding off in buying any new console for the coming period. I already have played so many racing, shooting, and sports games, that I would be surprised if these new machines can offer anything new aside from a new graphical splendor. Instead of better graphics, I would like to see more innovative use of the game as a medium. Let’s hope that Nintendo can really deliver with their new system and innovative controller.
